Mumbai down, Gujarat braces for ‘Ockhi’ impact
Gujarat prepared for “for the worst” and Mumbai faced heavy rainfall, as Cyclone Ockhi made its way along the western coast on Tuesday.
The cyclone is expected to make landfall near Surat by Tuesday midnight, officials said.
The authorities have closed schools in the region till Wednesday. The Coast Guard has called back around 13,000 fishing boats that ventured into the seas on Monday evening.
Mumbai hit the panic buttons on Tuesday as Cyclone Ockhi, which wreaked havoc in southern India, stood poised to hit the Western coast.
With parts of Mumbai and neighbouring regions receiving heavy rainfall since Monday evening, the Maharashtra government ordered schools and colleges to remain closed while the Disaster Management Cell of the state government went into full alert. Most people chose to stay indoors and attendance in offices were reported to be thin. According to the Indian Met Department, the cyclone is expected to hit coastal Gujarat and Maharashtra later tonight
