The Veteran Film Star Shashi Kapoor Cremated With State Honours


Mumbai, 6th Dec: The last rites of the veteran actor Sashi Kapoor were held at Santacruz Hindu crematorium on Tuesday noon with state honour. The state funeral was held amid massive security around 12 noon. This was followed by a minute’s silence. The actor-producer’s body was taken to the crematorium from his Juhu home in an ambulance at 11.45 am. About a dozen policemen draped the actor’s body in tricolour, which was later removed for the rituals. There were three rounds of fire to honour the late actor, who spent more than four decades in Hindi cinema. The actor’s body was given an electric cremation.
Hundreds of fans with umbrellas and raincoats gathered at the crematorium, undeterred by the warnings of a cyclone and heavy rain.
A number of eminent Bollywood celebrities, such as Shyam Benegal, Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta, Naseeruddin Shah, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Salim Khan , Ayan Mukherji, Hansal Mehta, Nandita Das, Lara Dutta with husband Mahesh Bhupati and Maharashtra politician Ramdas Athawale along with Kapoor family members – Karan Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor (Shashi Kapoor’s sons), Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor were spotted arriving to pay their last respect. Writer Salim Khan, who gave Shashi Kapoor the iconic one-line “Mere paas ma hai” in Deewar along with Javed Akhtar, was there as well. An emotional Bachchan was seen hugging the actor’s family members.
Monday evening saw the end of an era, with the sad demise of one of the country’s most handsome and celebrated actor Shashi Kapoor. The romantic screen icon of the ’70s breathed his last at 5:20 pm at a hospital in Mumbai after battling a prolonged ailment. He was 79.
