Ahmedabad, 9th Aug: After a long suspense Congress leader Ahmed Patel retains Rajya Sabha seat from Gujarat. The results confirmed by the a news agency at 1.45 AM of Wednesday. After weeks of dramatic political developments in Gujarat finally the fate of Ahmed Patel, the influential political secretary to Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi decided today.
It is after a gap of about two decades that a contest happened for Rajya Sabha polls in Gujarat, where official nominees of major parties used to get elected unopposed, after the BJP fielded a Congress rebel against Patel, who is seeking a fifth term. The ruling BJP has fielded party chief Amit Shah, Union minister Smriti Irani, and Balwantsinh Rajput, who till recently was Congress’ chief whip in the House, for the three RS seats.
While the victory for Patel restored confidence of the Congress party ahead of the assembly elections to be held in December, it is a big loss for BJP , who was planning for 150-plus assembly seats from Gujarat in the coming elections.
