Odisha Assembly passes bill on property rights to slum dwellers

Bhubaneswar, 14th Sept: In a historic move, Odisha Land Rights to Slum Dwellers Bill, 2017 passed in the State Assembly here on Wednesday. It will provide land to slum dwellers residing in municipalities and Notified Area Councils (NACs) of the state. The decision is beneficial for the slum dwellers, said Housing & Urban Development Minister Niranjan Pujari. Welcoming the legislation, Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra said that the bill will help the poor people, who are residing in the slums.
Earlier in August, Odisha cabinet had approved the proposal to provide land rights to the slum dwellers. The urban poor in slum will get land rights for residential use that is heritable, mortgageable and non-transferrable. In corporate areas, limited transferrable rights will be given, Minister said
