More then One Crore Non-Literates in Odisha, Literacy Mission has not met since 2001
Bhubaneswar, 15th sept: Odisha has more than one crore people who are not literate. But the Odisha State Literacy Mission headed by chief minister Naveen Patnaik has not met even once since it was constituted in 2001. All the same, out of the Rs 48.08 crore provided during the past five years by the central government to eradicate illiteracy, Rs 41.75 crore has been spent. The state’s school and mass education minister Badri Narayan Patra disclosed this in the Assembly Yesterday in a written reply to a question from Dilip Ray (BJP). Patra said the number of non-literate people in Odisha is 1,01,99,532 out of a total population of 4,19,74,218. Of them, 32,72,434 are male and 69,27,098 female. Besides the chief minister, the Literacy Mission has 30 other members. The minister said steps are being taken to convene a meeting. To a separate question from Dilip Ray, planning coordination minister Usha Devi said the Odisha State Planning Board has not met since October 15, 2007. The board ought to have 10 members, but all positions are vacant bar a vice-chairperson, advisor and officer on special duty (OSD). Similarly, the last meeting of the Odisha State Health Mission, also headed by the chief minister, was held on May 19, 2015. The Health Mission has 33 members and it is supposed to meet at least once in six months, health and family welfare minister Pratap Jena said in a written reply to another question from Dilip Ray
