MCL-BAIF-CCDP Project in Angul Chendipada
Vegetables have been part of the human diet from time immemorial. They are important components of daily diets & important sources of nutrients necessary for health. Vegetables are source of proteins, vitamins and other elements essential for human health and well being.
Under the crisis of lockdown Farmers supported under MCL BAIF CCDP are playing crucial role in supply of vegetables to entire village population and near by villages . Angul cluster under Chendipada block has covered 50 acres of vegetable cultivation like cucumber, bottle gourd, Pumpkin, bitter gourd, cabbage, cauliflower, watermelon, chilli, brinjal, tomato , green pea etc covering 150 farmers from eight project villages under Kampasala&Bahalsahi panchayat . Now the vegetable are under harvesting and have become crucial to food baskets at the period of National emergency and movement restrictions. It has become the one and only one affordabledietary supplement to households since all the poultry houses are also vacant across the state due outbreak of bird flu. It has become lucrativeearning sources of the enterprising farmers at doorstep. The consumes are sourcing directly from the farm at current stand still market situation .
The economic opportunities extended under MCL BAIF CCDPare combined with reduction of trade constraints & technology transfer to farmers to increase their yields in sustainable ways that create wealth . The agro-ecosystems in these project ecologies offer great opportunities for commercial production of vegetables . Most of these vegetables are perishable and therefore attracted comprehensive planning for movement, Storage, processing and distribution.
Senior Project Officer SudhansuRayaguru says The challenges are low education level , small farm sizes and low level of annual income realized from farms.Farmers have not aware any nutrition value of specific vegetables . MCL BAIF CCDP is trying to address all the issue in sustainable approach by way of inputs and technology support practised by successful farmers across the country. Trellis method of cultivation has been introduced after technology transfer from Gujrat based farm entrepreneurs. Regular technical training, nutrition value analysis , keeping quality & market demand analysis has become the part of the SOP under Improved vegetable programme. All efforts&activities have been incorporated to reduce post harvest loss by way of supply of plastic Carets & efficient transportation system. Negotiations with organised vegetable marketing institutions are under process. The farmers will be organized into active and efficientfunctioning groups that could help the marketing of the vegetable produced. Siba parsad Das ( APO ) says We look forward for vegetable based industries and infrastructure development at village level and realise the vision of doubling farmers income within a period of five years.
