Mother and Daughter travelling in Howrah-Jodhpur Express jumps from moving train to escape sexual harassment
Kanpur, 14th Nov: It is a shocking news for the commuters. Last Saturday night a woman and her teenage daughter, travelling from Kolkata to Delhi in a general coach of the Howrah-Jodhpur Express, were injured after they jumped off the moving train near Kanpur in a bid to escape eve-teasing, police said Yesterday. The incident took place between Chandari and Kanpur railway station. The minor is
a student of class nine.
According to police, some 10 to 15 youths allegedly started troubling and teasing the woman’s daughter soon after the train left Howrah. The mother of the victim reported the matter to the security personnel in the train and the youths were taken away. But, they returned later and again started harassing the mother and the daughter. With no help coming their way, they jumped off the train in a desperate measure to save themselves, the police said.
The woman and her daughter were found injured and unconscious near the railway tracks and rushed to a hospital. After regaining consciousness, they narrated their harrowing experience to police. They were discharged from the hospital yesterday after treatment, police informed. The woman’s husband works at a private firm in Delhi. A case has been registered against the unnamed accused for assaulting women with intent to disrobe them, criminal intimidation and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. A woman sub-inspector and a constable of the GRP has been suspended for failing to extend help to the victims, Police officials said.
